On second thought, let’s not download this “cortandfatboy” show. It is a silly show.

Cockneys are the English version of New York Bronx residents.
A one-line description for Monday? Did Byron drop by?
You always apologize for the best episodes.
I thought the Superman trailer was perfect. I caught me off guard. Also, I know they aren’t for me, or you for that matter. They are for the new generation of fans. You, me are all going to see it.
I used to be considered a Comic Book nerd, but at some point that went from people who know about some comics, to people who complain if any minutiae is slightly different. I liked the recent Batman movie, but that’s because I enjoyed the Batman premise, because it can be played out many different ways.
I always considered Cockney the deep south accent of England.
Even with the near LOL cats esq level of the beginning of the show, the show was pretty enjoyable.
“Also, I know they aren’t for me, or you for that matter. They are for the new generation of fans.”
They don’t like it. The “new generation” of fans thought that ad was BORING. Because it was.
The overall perception of Superman is, and has been for about 2 decades now, that he is boring. That his story is boring, that he’s boring as a character, etc. If they want to reach a new generation of fans – they need to NOT BE BORING.
My 12 and 14 year old(new generation) where pretty excited when supes appeared at the end. I found it set them up perfect for his appearance at the end. Maybe the dark and twisted 12 to 14 year old you hang out with have some how acquired 20 years of cliche, so I suppose I could be wrong.
I do need to admit that I would rather have the trailer be a tease, then show key elements that would have been far cooler if I hadn’t seen them before.
I’m happy your 12 & 14 year old liked the trailer. I’m pretty sure their reactions do not represent the majority of responses to it. That doesn’t mean the majority of children are dark and twisted, either. it does mean that young people (along with most of the general populace) considers Superman to be boring now. This trailer doesn’t dissuade ANYONE of that notion.
There’s a version of the trailer that was cut for comic-con that DOES attempt to show people that Superman DOES THINGS in this trailer and is more than a walking logo. But that’s not what anyone saw this weekend. They saw the Superman Returns trailer, Part II.
My premise is that they are going after a new demographic. When a brand goes after a new demographic, it’s usually 10-14 year olds. Comic-con? you aren’t expanding any demographics there. It’s a corporate churn to generate enough excitement about entrenched fans so that effectively do the advertising. Two different groups, two different goals; a group of people who, most likely, never saw that horrid Superman Returns. So they wouldn’t really think of it as a part 2.
“..doesn’t dissuade ANYONE of that notion.”
Besides me, and my geek friend who enjoyed it, and their kids. I don’t think that word means what you think it means. also, stop yelling.
They’re trying to create a new demographic: People who don’t think Superman is boring. This trailer isn’t doing that effectively. Yes, I know it worked for you, your girl scout troop and 8 boys on the range. I’m suggesting you’re outliers.
I know what dissuade means. I’m not yelling.
You are often a rude dick in the comments. Stop being that.
Just how wide a sample set do you have to base your end of the argument on? I think none of us here could vouch for more than maybe 3 kids who have seen or reacted to the trailer. Not enough to generalize on from either end of the argument, unless there are generation-specific articles I haven’t seen.
But that’s all really irrelevant. The fact remains that they had better footage, more compelling footage (no matter the target demographic), and they chose not to use it, which is a failing on the part of DC/WB.
I can vouch for a whole girl scout troop, and about 8 boys ion the range.
My point is, cultivating a new demographic is different then pandering to an existing demographic.
Just because a demographic is pre-existing doesn’t mean they’re pandering to it by including more shots of the main character in action. But ignoring that demographic is equally foolhardy on their part. A new demographic is great. It keeps your brand alive and vital, encourages you to do better. But just like with DCnU, they aren’t doing a good enough job appealing to either demographic. I understand you have quite a few people in that age range to go on, and that’s all well and good, but I would bet 10 bucks to a kick in the nuts that they would have been a lot MORE excited if the trailer included more Superman than Clark Kent thumbing a ride outside Vancouver.
They weren’t trying to pull in a new demographic with that trailer. They were showing their cynicism and closed-minded greediness by not sharing footage everyone knew was out there. “Those geeks will go see it no matter what we show.” Hell, even we geeks say that. But even we will tire of the bullshit if they do this much more, and their box office receipts will show it, just like their cynicism with DCnU has repaid them with declining interest.
If it was for the new generation of fans (myself included) it would have been some random massive dubstep song, 60% action, 10% logo, and 30% pure cocaine fueled insanity. That trailer was made for patriotic National Geographic fans, not generation ADHD.
Also, the Steam Summer Sale was awesome.
By new fans I mean the next demographic. 10-14 year old’s is where you get your most new fans. It’s also the age they start to become loyal to brands.
Generation ADHD? you need to know more kids. The media has hyped the ‘problems’ of their generation far beyond any reality.
By generatIon ADHD I was more so referring to the division of our attention into the near infinite possibilities for consumption and creation at our disposal; to the fact that we’ve grown up completely immersed in the internet and are pretty well adapted to the 24hr news cycle, the endless access to information, and the sort of hazy fifth dimension we walk around in that redefines social interaction, not any actual problems any one claims about us. Also, I know plenty of kids in that age range, and I doubt any of them, without a healthy appreciation for cinematography or a previous knowledge and love for Superman, are going to enjoy that trailer at all. You show them one of those Avengers trailers though, or maybe the comic con Superman trailer, that’s how you get them.
Nobody says ‘Apples and Pears for the stairs’. Apples and Pears means stairs. They say it instead of stairs, that is the rhyming part. Although, I’m glad we don’t use it in Scotland. We have our own language, it’s mostly alcohol induced but it’s ours
Rhyming slang was invented (some say) for London criminals to have their own language so the cops won’t understand what they were saying. It served a purpose once but is just a joke now. Oh, and Ryan really doesn’t like the UK, does he?
…
Cockney is an accent as well as rhyming slang.
What you failed to consider is that some cockney rhyming slang has caught on in popular usage. E.g. “use your loaf” – load of bread = head.
Yeah, it’s silly, but it’s just another thing adding to the richness of the English language.
Well, the actual accent is called Cockney the rhyming slang is just a use of words rather than how people sound saying them. It is only called ‘Cockney rhyming slang’ because of where it originated.
What amazes me about the UK is the various accents it has for a relatively small group of Islands. The accents you will hear in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and London (the East End especially or Cockney) are not only different from each other but also to those from Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Even Scottish has variants, I am from the West and I sound different from someone born and bred in the Highlands for example. It’s actually pretty awesome
/beginsnoodybritishaccent Dishonor upon both of you! You enjoin us to enact the “scritch my belly” routine at our places of employ and yet you will not do so even for Ryan Flemming! Outrage! As recompense you must now expose your bellies to none other than Byron Beck on Thursday and take thine lumps lest you forever take on the title of hypocrite! /endsnoodybritishaccent
Cat skritchings.
I never thought you guys would cover this topic so thoroughly. Beautiful
A++ would download again.
