Courtenay Hameister tries to step into Cort’s shoes at the top of the show, to… interesting results. From such auspicious beginnings we delve into topics like mean teachers and what it must have been like to go to Barbarian School, Chick-Fil-A’s problems being a homophobic company in a country that isn’t as cool with that as it used to be, Courtenay’s problems with the word homophobic, Courtenay’s triumph in getting Live Wire renewed at OPB, and a quick peek behind the Public Radio curtain, which is way more fascinating than you’d think, in that it’s actually fascinating. Also fascinating: An album Courtenay is helping make in tribute to a recently passed friend, providing a look into the creative process, and the predilection creators have towards preciousness, and how that can help, but also hinder.

Ira Glass’ response to the Car Talk news – 390 comments! Public radio fans are in an uproar. Also, they’re boiling water for tea:

Oops….one more – James Hampton was the name of the artist who built a throne and crowns and shrine in a huge garage with found objects (if you look at the fourth picture down, you can see one of the ornamental objects covered in foil, including lightbulbs) over the course of 14 years. The result of his work is now in the Smithsonian as one of the most extensive and intricate pieces of outsider art ever discovered. (No one knew he was doing it until after he passed away and stopped paying rent on the garage.)

And I think I might’ve fucked up…I think Cort played Blackbird Pie, which wasn’t about James Hampton at all. Their song about James was called “St. James” and it’s on “After All.” I highly recommend a listen after you’ve read the story. One of my favorite lines:
“Wayward souls,
a murder of crows
living in the family tree.”

Every time I hear you mention that you lived in Texas it just… Blows my mind. At least Denton is better than Nacogdoches. While licvng in Nac I developed quite an affinity for the Chik-Fil-A nuggets and since moving back North haven’t found anything even close to those juicy little bursts of chickeny flavour. Until recently! KFC has these new Original Recipe Bites and they’re hella-close to the Chik-Fil-A nuggets.
Unfortunately there’s still the guilt associated with eating fast food and the factory farms that the chicken comes from.

My brother lived in Nacogdoches for a couple years with some friends who went to school there. He has great memories of living there, but didn’t much like the town either. He was a waiter and said everyone ordered everything with ranch, no matter what. As in, “Oh, I’m just gonna have some iced tea. But can I get some ranch with that?”

I think the key to the greatness of CFA nuggets is that they pressure fry them. Also, I found a recipe online that mixed the dredging flour with powdered sugar! Oh, those nutty, hate-filled baptist motherfuckers.

Em Oh Oh En! That’s how you spell Bodymass index!

Joke Tattoos: The stupid FUCKING mustache on the finger. WHY? Why is that funny?

I don’t understand the outrage directed at this Chik-fil-A guy. Are we surprised by his position? A 65 year old, white, evangelical republican who opposes gay marriage? What’s the controversy here? The man shares the same anti-gay, religiously inspired stance that most Republicans hold. The same position that about half of all Americans hold, for that matter. Should we boycott Marriott hotels because they’re owned by a Mormon, who most likely opposes gay marriage? What about In-N-Out Burger? Should we boycott any business affiliated with the 50% of Americans who still oppose gay marriage?

Should we just ignore it, then? I guess I don’t understand why anyone would take exception to people standing up where they can. If this is where I can make a stand, then I will. Can I make a stand to every business in every city that opposes equality in marriage? No, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t make an attempt where it is possible.

I think the reason he’s a target is that he’s made his feelings part of their corporate identity. I agree with you – I’m sure if we knew the politics of most of the CEOs of the companies whose goods and services we purchase, we’d be appalled. But most of them are keeping their mouths shut. Cathy just needs to STFU.

But because he hasn’t up to now, he’s lost customers (and, apparently, his PR guy). A real cautionary tale for all the other Romney-like CEOs out there.

I’m upset over him actively funding anti-gay groups, at least one of which has made the “hate group” list of the SPLC. He is entitled to his opinion and can do what he likes with his freedom of speech and his money but I also have the same rights. I choose to speak out against hate groups and I won’t willingly shop from people who support them.
