This is the closest we’ve been to Dr. No-Love returning in the form of David Walker. It’s not as it there’s not enough pressure to cause an eruption: The crappy employers we’ve known, but never blown the whistle on, the crappy employees we’ve been solely to keep that check coming, and the crappy friends we’ve been, letting people go headlong into situations they deserve better than. The difference between keeping yourself aware of your surroundings, and paralyzing yourself with ineffectuality because you confused facebooking about stuff with actually DOING stuff. The ridiculousness of self-righteousness when it comes from a position of privilege. 315 dollar basketball shoes nobody’s ever going to play basketball in. Doctor Who still not having a set premiere date in America. Tim Burton and Kevin Smith. Thank your diety of choice for the fact David Walker has figured out a way to let off steam that translates into pretty pictures for the rest of us.

Yeah, that’s call centers. Less likely to get killed by the machinery, but I can tell you that its almost equally unhealthy. Our call center has the firetruck/ambulance called to the center once a week. At one point when we were doing sales, the security guard counted three straight weeks when they were called every single day. I work for an outsourced call center for Bank of America. I’m the person that you call when you didn’t pay your bill and feel like whining your way out of the late fee, or blame for interest charges. Management isn’t as abusive here as it is at another center that I worked for as an outsource for Verizon Wireless, but you don’t really have any friends in management, either. Add to the general health concerns caused by the EMTs, on a staff of 500 people, there are at least 30 men over the weight of 300 pounds, and about as many women over the weight of 250. Its basically the last stop before the unemployment office.
I’m gonna go drink now.
There’s too much to say about call center work to really put in here, and I want to remain in a decent mood for the evening.
I do have something of significance to add, though.
If you even remotely mention/joke about/barely consider the word “unionize”, you are FLAT OUT FUCKING FIRED. Gone. Bye bye. Non-rehireable. You are flatly denied unemployment benefits, and are often unofficially blacklisted, since your manager/teammates/HR will talk to peers at other call centers and tell them what happened. No question, no discussion, no debate. They fire you and don’t look back. One of the last places I worked would actually litigate on the grounds that you violated your employment contract with them by discussing unionizing.
Akin is a influential member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
Pretty. He is part of the ongoing attack against Science going on by the GOP.

And Call center unions:

You have to fight for it, just like auto unions did. If you aren’t willing to stand up and take the risk, then you will always be shat on.
Here’s the bit about the Texas GOP rejecting critical thining in education to keep kids dumb http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/texas-gop-rejects-critical-thinking-skills-really/2012/07/08/gJQAHNpFXW_blog.html
Thanks for the link.
I just read that platform. Holy fuck is that scary.
Climate Change happens when your at the end of an age it has always happened humans maybe account for 1% of the problem, there is more CO2 emmited from one volcano eruption that humans have created in 50 years. Climate Change is happening but humans aren’t the problem and creating taxes on cow farts isn’t going to change anything its just giving more money to the 1%. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfHW7KR33IQ The Founder of the weather channel talking about the global warming fraud. I agree completely with you guys on every political topic except for climate change because it is a way for the 1% to exploit the people for money out of fear that the earth is going to be destroyed even though corporations are responsible for most of the CO2 emmisions. Love You Guys
lol wanted to leave this comment on the monday show but clicked on the wrong link sorry, anyway heres another good youtube clip on global warming if anyone is interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhu3ESXvGR4&feature=relmfu
It’s perfectly cool (heh. weather pun) since both shows basically blended into one another, tonally. It’s the closest the show has gotten to having a throughline/continuity between guests as we’ve gotten in awhile.
I throw my fist in the air in solidarity with my brothers for today’s show!!! Right on!
I realize this show is “old” now, but still.
Politicians covering for each other for the sake of a party victory isn’t “sports mentality,” nor is it new. It’s politics. It’s about manipulating people into supporting you so you can get the influence you need to accomplish what you want. You weigh the loss (supporting someone you don’t agree with) against the gain (adding someone to your team to increase visibility, voting/legislative/whatever power). Everyone engages in politics, because it’s how you win. It’s just good sense. Obama can’t be seen in his boxers yelling at an MMA match on TV, because it would influence how people see him and how much they trust him, regardless of his policies or intelligence. You engage in politics when you go to a job interview, because you dress nicer than you would otherwise, talk smarter than you would otherwise, and you twist your answers to present you in a positive light. You don’t want them looking at your Facebook because, while you’re not ashamed of anything, you know that a picture of you drunk at a party would affect their perception of you, regardless of that picture’s relevance to your ability to do the job.
Politics is just how you deal with people who have emotions and motivations. This is why politicians run us instead of scientists; science doesn’t get people motivated on a moral or emotional level, and politicking against science does. It’s basic evolution: politicians are in power because people chose them over scientists or teachers or soldiers. The problem is that politics is a tool for winning opinion, and doesn’t inform the validity of the policy or whatever being argued. So I support your suggestion of having politics AND something else. One power to decide a good course of action, and one to convince people to follow it. Just noting that it isn’t a new phenomenon, nor can you blame it on Americans or basketball or people getting dumber.
Btw, I should put all that under a big fat “I think” banner. I’m not a politiciologist, and last time I tried to be right I was wrong.
“The last time I tried to be right I was wrong.”
If only our politicians would say that once in a while. Maybe then we’d have a little more faith in them.
I totally related with Cort’s movie going experience. My family jokes with me that I’m a magnet when it comes to getting that last minute person/group coming in the theater and sitting right behind me making noise or kicking my chair, etc. It is infuriating because of how much it costs to go to a movie and the fact that people just don’t have any common courtesy manners anymore. I want to yell at them, but I bite my lip because I know if I yell something I will look like the jerk and my wife will be pissed. Somehow she can just tune it all out, but I don’t have that luxury unfortunately. Thanks to your show I have discovered the Roseway and anytime we have the option of going there we drive up from Keizer. That theater is awesome! The popcorn is awesome! The prices are awesome! And I’ve never had the terrible magnet experience there! Thank you so much for sharing that gem!
Interesting, Keizer gets the squiqqly misspelled line from spell check. The suggestion they give is: Pfizer. Really spell check, Pfizer, really?
I hate Facebook! And all these great shows and things I like are going to make me conform!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!
