Erik Henriksen of the Portland Mercury was drafted into action by you, the listener, to fill in for an absent Courtenay Hameister. After some donut-related complications in the beginning, a fascinating episode unfolds, involving an engrossing game you can play the next time you find yourself on public transit, and a discussion on Portland’s decision to put fluoride in the water. Also discussed: The most punchable face in Hollywood, and the best werewolf ever, and why getting into the genre of Fantasy isn’t exactly the easiest, nor does Fantasy seem to want to make it easy, although when it comes to fandoms, at least Fantasy doesn’t seem to be as full of plot-spoiling jerks as other genres often do.

Most punchable face in hollywood? Country singer Toby Keith.

I hope they don’t put it to a vote. The ignorant liars have too much influence over the process in Portland.

It should be noted that the Water Bureau uses chlorine and ammonia to disinfect the water, so it’s not just water directly out of the Bull Run.

the second they do it? haha, it take up to three days for the water to get to you tap.
If you taste it immediately, it’s in your head. OR you are drinking right form the pumps!

Hollywood face to punch? George Lucas… or maybe Stan Lee.

Patrick Ruthfuss: The Kingkiller Chronicle is so damn good.

I find it funny how you will carefully avoid a spoiler for a book that’s been out for years, but spoil away something that’s on 2 weeks old.

Sword of Shanara!?! “Shit like that” is a good definition of that book. Do Not Read, it’s horrid.

“Bowser must fight Elvis”. That was f’n hilarious.

Great episode, and it was refreshing to hear some book talk.
And North Village is the Capitol of Xanth.
The real question why can I remember that, but not where I put down my glasses?

The best werewolf in my opinion (from a design standpoint) are the werewolf aliens from the Doctor Who episode “Tooth and Claw”

The reason why your not supposed to swallow your toothpaste is because of the sodium fluoride. It’s a neuro toxin and its more toxic to the human body than lead. If all your doing is gargling your tap water to clean your teeth then i guess your alright but who does that just go buy some listerine, but if your drinking it then your ingesting toxins. If you dont believe me then do some of your own research. Just wanted to warn you guys, loved the show have hendrickson on more reguraly if possible he’s really funny :D

So where is this research? People keep claiming things like this but are completely unable to provide any proof. If Portland is the largest city in the United States to have un-florinated water and many of the other cities that are larger than us have been using fluoride in their water for DECADES where are all the people across the country in these cities with debilitating conditions caused by all the evil fluoride in their water? No one can seem to produce any of them.

Jesus fucking Christ. They don’t put fluoride into water in the quantities it exists in toothpaste. Also, you’re not fucking supposed to eat toothpaste. Anything in excess amounts is bad for you, which is why comparing putting fluoride into water to eating toothpaste is just silly.

It’s like these idiots who once read somewhere that xylitol gum kills does (which is true but it’s actually good for human consumption because it prevents caries and neutralises mouth pH) so they refuse to have any in the house because they have dogs, yet they eat a ton of chocolate (also toxic for dogs).

Its “Neuro Toxin” it affects the way your brain works i. e. slow it down. Plus I never said your supposed to eat toothpaste, I said your not supposed to swallow toothpaste because of the fluoride. Even if it is in small doses I would still rather not drink toxins would you? This is the reason why Fluoride in tap water has been banned in most countries in Europe because it’s unhealthy. Its the same like aspartame which most people think is harmless but actually causes cancer in large doses (or small doses over a long period of time). Im not trying to spread fear I was just trying to help some people out. Here are some Articles as well. http://biovedawellness.com/2010/04/sodium-fluoride-the-dangers-and-side-effects/, http://www.livestrong.com/article/409678-sodium-fluoride-side-effects/

Seriously, you are using Europe as an example of why not to put Fluoride in the water? The country that has been the butt of bad teeth jokes for decades. And, they just don’t add the Fluoride to the water there. They still add it to other things, such as salt. Or, they just have more in their toothpaste. (If you compare fluoride levels in toothpaste in the US vs other countries without fluoride in their water supplies, their toothpaste has vastly higher amounts of fluoride.)

Also, Fluoride is already in the vast majority of water we all drink. Adding fluoride to the water is usually just about getting it to a specific ratio. A ratio that is high enough to help your teeth, but low enough that it will cause no ill effects in 99.9% of the population.

Doing a Google search for Fluoride safety is scary, but not in that way. In the Jenny McCarthy Vaccines cause Autism kind of way…

The Black Cauldron was part of the Chronicles of Prydain written by Lloyd Alexander.
I read those books when I was in Middle School and I loved the shit out of them. They got me into fantasy.

I just started listening to this episode, but wanted to comment on something before I listen any further. It was great to hear a reference to Annie’s. The place is not meant to be anything more than a place to find doughnuts and other pastries, but as a frequent visitor to Portland, I will say that if I need a doughnut fix (and sometimes it’s more than I care to admit, but I do resist), Annie’s is my top choice. I am not related to any of them nor do I work there, so this is a guilt-free endorsement.

I also state this after just finishing the Tuesday podcast, and hearing about how Alzheimer’s may be called a Type III diabetes. I’m in my car hearing this, and I think of how I’ve struggled with my health for most of my life. There was a time when I did not care, I ate carelessly and didn’t care. Yet I was a news producer who purposely put up a lot of health stories and packages, as if the wiser person in the back of my head was saying “teach someone so they don’t have to suffer like you”. In other words, I knew what I was doing to myself but didn’t want to admit it. A car accident shouldn’t have to be the reason to make change, I could not be here writing this reply. I have not done liquid diets/fasts like David Walker, but would like to. The idea of health and chemistry, and how it all connects with the mind and everything: it becomes more important as one comes older, and after hearing the show, I just wonder how much damage I’ve done and what will be the damage forthcoming. My biggest fear is losing any sense of comprehension, to where I’m not going to know a damn thing or anyone. I wish it had clicked in when I was 9 and was told “it’s going to be a struggle when you’re in the double digits” but I’m now on the stationary bike every day, want to do more, and I’m making an effort.

I bring this up because hearing the doughnut reference in one show right after hearing the end of another with the Alzheimer’s reference… I’m just glad that I now understand the benefits of moderation.

I have a totally unrelated question… who’s the guy doing the intro? Is it a computered voice, Bobby, or some other random person? Always curious. This is my favorite intro music.
