Matt Bors, Political Cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize shortlister, guests on today’s show with Courtenay Hameister, on the day that Mitt Romney and Barack Obama go head-to-head for the first time in a televised debate. Except we don’t really talk about that. We talk about silly drinking games and pre-planned zingers, yeah, but we spend more time talking about what it’s like to be the youngest member of a dying breed of artist, and the casual vacation he took in 2010 with his friend Ted Rall. That vacation destination? Oh, Afghanistan. Sure, we get into how he comes up with his ideas, but again – it’s the why that’s more important, and why Matt Bors does what he does is infinitely fascinating.

I think the sports fans you know are still somehow inherently more tolerant of nerd shit than the sports fans I know. Maybe it’s a regional thing – but in a land filled with rednecks that still think iPhones are for fancy people and Facebook is some vast, complex, unnavigable trickery of Bill Gates I get all kinds of shit for dropping the same cash to go for a scifi convention that they pay to go get a hotel room in New Orleans and go to a Saints game.

Also, great show. I’ve spent the past hour coming back through Matt Bors blog reading comics. Pretty fun way to spend an hour.

Geeks had always crapped on sports.
Good river analogy, btw.

Why do you have to tie making fun of sports to nerdiness? Maybe I just don’t like sports. Either way, those comments you read sounded more along the line of “I gleefully admit I don’t follow sports and am therefore uninterested in whatever everyone has been talking about,” rather than actually being hostile towards people who like sports.

P.S. While I’m uninterested in “sports” (NFL, NBA, etc.), I LOVE the Olympics. Go figure.

I haven’t seen the geek/nerd community hate on sports as much as sports fans hate on other sports fan’s tastes. College b.ball fans saying NBA fans are stupid for liking a sport that according to them has no passion. Soccer fans saying football fans are dumb enough to sit through a game that has too many game time stoppages and football fans saying any game that can result in a draw is a waste of time. Its kind of like different geek camps scorning another geek camp for liking Star Wars more than Star Trek. Either way, sports fans are just as wonky as geeks. Talk to an avid baseball fan and his/her knowledge of stats and the game’s history is vast and just as meaningless in relation to the real world as knowing how to speak Klingon.
