David Walker has opinions, you guys. Lots of them. Some of them good, some of them bad. Not as bad as Bobby’s, who, it turns out, is entirely responsible for every bad sequel/prequel that ever existed in the history of ever. Today’s episode explores the allure of horror as a genre, and explains why people keep going back to the well even though the chances of finding something good in there seem to get lower and lower. It’s kind of like the lottery, or gambling, a topic that also gets brought up, as David explains why our country’s puritanical sensibilities are still strong in our national fabric, even if everyone you know is familiar with stuff like Goatse & 2 Girls 1 Cup. Why do we still freak out at nip slips and sideboob? Why do we waste cash on lottery tickets? Why do people think ANYONE wants to know how Leatherface got that way? Important questions answered in today’s show.

How did you guys not mention The Cabin in the Woods while discussing the current state of the horror genre? Bobby, if Cort and David haven’t seen it yet, please make them watch it!

It jumped in and out of my frontal lobe while we were talking. I was going to make a point about how Cabin in the Woods only works if you’re the kind of person who has spent a lot of time stomping around in the mud of the horror genre. It’s less a horror movie than it is a comedy riffing on why horror movies work. Which is essentially why Scream worked, too.

Exactly! It’s both a love letter to the horror genre, and a thoughtful commentary on the industry behind it.

Dave will just find a way to hate it.

Also, here’s one of the shorts that David wrote for AMC

That was pretty cool. At first I was bothered by all the scientific inaccuracies (The Black Widow and the Brown Recluse are the only two spiders in North America with a potentially deadly bite, and the Recluse is notoriously non agressive at that), but then I quickly realized the whole thing was supposed to be completely ridiculous anyway. Good stuff.
