David Walker. Courtenay Hameister. It is a show that is equal parts Philosophical. And Scatological. Concerned with matters of the heart. And matters of the fart. Discussions of objectification and its effects on all people, male and female. Discussions of flatulation, and its effects on all people, witting and unwitting. Conversations that lead to frustration, then enlightenment, and then confusion and back again. Featuring special guest stars immaturity, anger, helplessness, hope, ambition, awkwardness, seriousness, silliness, and inappropriate appropriateness. In short, it’s pretty much what you’d expect to happen when David and Courtenay occupy the same space for an hour. It’s good. Enjoy your barbecues and such tomorrow. Even if you’re not American.

You guys, I posted the Better Marriage Blanket video in the comments for another show like a year ago! And to think I trusted that you would remember every single word I ever said for all time…

First off, great to hear Courtenay Hameister and David Walker in the same episode.

One thing that hasn’t been discussed about D’Angelo’s downfall is more musical and social. The video for “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” did bring to him the kind of attention he did not expect or want, but there was a big difference on how each of his first two albums were perceived. BROWN SUGAR had been viewed as the reawakening of soul music, and unfortunately created the term neo-soul. VOODOO became a breakthrough not only amongst his fans/core audience, but it received a lot of attention in rock circles from critics and artists alike. They were treating the album as if it was up there with Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield, so along with growing female audiences, D’Angelo was being treated as a monarch of sorts, as someone who would bring back integrity in the music that some felt was sorely lacking. VOODOO had a buzz for two, maybe three years, before its release and when it was finally out, the music was overwhelming. Now, D’Angelo was being overwhelmed, and that’s when he simply stopped and returned to being Michael Archer. One of the best tracks he did during this time period was his cover of Fela Kuti’s “Water No Get Enemy” which featured Macy Gray and The Soultronics (i.e. various members of The Roots). To me, he sounded like he did not have a care in the world, and the vibe in the studio sounded incredible. Had he been a bit more secure and strong about what was going on, it wouldn’t have been so quiet for him. Now all we need is an album of new material, which we have been told is “to come”.

A story circulating this week has people talking about on how flatulence may help reduce high blood pressure. Upon doing a search, it seems this was known at least four years ago. I too saw a photo of that pad/patch that will allegedly absorb the stench of a fart, but wasn’t there an animated skit on Nickelodeon during commercial breaks where a student would rip one, they would recommend someone placing a drier sheet inside of their pants, and the response after a fart would be “ooh, lilacs”? Drier sheets are much cheaper than these flatulence pads. It may be a bit lo-fi but at least someone can go “oh, did someone open a box of Snuggles?” Maybe not. If anything, if someone does let themselves go, it’s okay to offer a cheers to them and say “to your health.”

Oh, and Courtenay was the only one to not answer the the question:

Shower peeing– yay or nay?

There was an episode of The Andy Griffith Show where Opie’s football coach was black. Beyond that… not really any black people at all. I grew up loving it, and then I hit a phase where I didn’t want to love it because I realized that most of the people around me loved it because they saw it as some sort of ideal place because there were no black people. I’ve come around to embracing that I can have my reasons for loving it that don’t secretly make me racist.

I highly recommend Beyond Beats and Rhymes. I know almost nothing about hip hop but I was riveted.

Set up a ‘Courtenay’s Graduation’ party fundraiser and if she doesn’t have the degree by summer 2014, all of Westborothe money gets donated to the Westboro Baptist Church in the name of Live Wire. Motivation, check.

Not sure how it works in Oregon, or even if it stll works this way in Washington, but when I was going to school if you have a masters degree it doesn’t matter what it is in you can be a teacher.

College is about increasing knowledge and learning rational thinking. Those create opportunities. Its not a magic employable factory.

Motivation and planning to utilize you’re increased knowledge and contacts leads to success.

I saw an interview with a guy who was protesting in England. He was complaining he couldn’t find a job. His degree? Ghost stories.

If college is solely about walking into a job sitting in a cube, then study something the market wants or needs. If you’re degree is in something like Ghost Stories, then at best, you can use that to sell sort stories.

On a side note, what is better:
Writing one post about several things in the podcast, or a post for each thing one wants to talk about.

Quote of the Show

Cort: “The world will feel my knife!”

On the subject of Neighbors who set off fireworks for days before and after Independence Day:

These people are dog fuckers. The motherfuckers in a 3 block radius around me did this for two weeks before, and are still doing it (it’s July 7th now).

I CAN’T STAND being that guy that ruins the “fun”, but I finally had to call the cops.

The neighbor’s response (after the officers left them with a warning)?

“Fuck them! I’ll just shoot’em off later, and not as often so the cops can’t find me! Fuckin’ Assholes!”
