Mike Russell puts a cherry on top of the podcast sundae that’s been this weeks of episodes, somehow sythesizing the styles and sensibilites of all of this week’s guests: The controversy surrounding the Watchmen prequel, the silliness of the Star Wars re-release, the allure of The Hunger Games, and the manly, manly mustache of Sam Elliott; all topics that get put in the conversational cuisinart and whipped up into a funny, thoughtful froth. All that, and reviews of Daniel Radcliffe’s The Lady in Black, and the found-footage superhero story Chronicle.

Byron Beck and Big Jim Willig return like a dynamic duo of conversational magic, touching on topics such as: How do you act when you rediscover your inner child? Do you talk to him, or do you freeze up? What’s the most heroic act performed by these trash-talking nerds raised on superhero stories? Where are the gossip lines Byron won’t cross? How exactly did a truck come to find itself parked on a young, stoned Big Jim’s leg? Why is it a terrible idea for Big Jim and Don Frost to start charging for their podcast? And how does Cort handle maybe the most superheroic task laid before him: Potty training his two daughters? A show that alternates between deep, insightful, harrowing, and hilaribble – which is hilarious and horrible, smashed together like Cort’s chest hair.

Courtenay Hameister brought a bottle of Champagne and her friend, essayist Stacy Bolt. But what was uncorked was a long discussion about personal definition, and how we build those definitions of ourselves, and with what. The building blocks of nerdery are examined, weighed, and poked fun at, with help from Stacy’s essay “Nerd Husbandry.” The champagne flows, and the discussion becomes a sometimes nimble, sometimes fumbly dance around the blurry, constantly shifting lines between nerd and oppressor, comedian and victim, enthusiast and obssessive.

David Walker is in love? I don’t know what sort of strange alternate dimension we’ve wandered into, but after a brief conversation about our failing bodies, Ron Paul, and other annoying things on the internet, David talks about how he found himself with a girlfriend, how he realized he sorta HAD to tell everyone via facebook, and how he knew he was ready to let the world know that Dr. No-Love has been locked away for a long, long time. Somehow, a couple conversations about professional wrestling and the Florida Primaries also popped up (they’re pretty similar, to be honest) and Cort dispensed some wisdom about what moves you can and can’t make early in the relationship if you want to get to a point 12 years later where you can speak almost telepathically with your significant other. It’s definitely a David Walker episode like no other.

Ryan Fleming is full of all sorts of rage and righteous indignation, which is a nice switch because the guy NORMALLY filled with rage and righteous indignation, one Mr. Bobby Roberts, is cowed because someone was mean to him on the internet. Cort just likes to watch the world burn, and such, the topics filling him with glee, filling Ryan with rage, and filling Fatty with remorse, include: The Console Wars were prematurely announced, the Walking Dead’s Season 2 plot had more holes than the zombies’ bodies, Fatboy talks too damned much, your car batteries aren’t safe in the slightest, That Ferris Bueller ad for Honda engenders some mixed feelings, Facebook has become a repository for bad memes based on old urban legends, how the hell do you watch a human being JUMP OVER another human being and not even mention it, and SOPA puts on a new suit and prepares to go on the stroll.
